    Don't use an automotive alternator!!

The marine alternator have specially designed shielded brushes on the slip 
rings. The shielding prevents the brushes from being a source of ignition. 
Although you have a diesel engine, there are still times that explosive 
vapors may be present ie propane gas, alcohol from stove, cleaning solvents, 
ect.
