Hugh,

A good tool that will  help you get the old packing out is a scribe with a
right angle near the tip. I remembered my father having such a tool and
tried to buy one at my friendly hardware store. They did not  have one, but
they loaned me a pick that they had gotten from a dentist.

The owner of the hardware store said that he asks his dentist to save any
picks that he is planning to throw away and said that he had acquired a set
of very handy small tools this way.

Just a thought.
