Joe,
Several tests you can do.  Look at the bearing to see
if the rubber ridges are worn at the top or sides--seen
aft looking forward.  A small magnifying glass helps if
your eyes are like mine.  Also, with the shaft bolted
to the transmission try to move it up or down, it
shouldn't have any give.  If it wobbles that's a sure
sign to replace it.  A new bearing is quite snug and
tight out of the water.  You might want to replace the
packing in the stuffing box, but the box is usually
indestructible unless you can see where the shaft has
worn away metal.  The original bronze shaft & any marks
is a good indicator of wear.

Subject: [alberg30] re-installing an A4

...the stuffing box and cutlass bearing (replaced in
1997) have not seen much use since the boat has been on
the hard for two or three years. Do I need to replace
these?
