[Alberg30] Keels

My experience is similar to Brian's - hull #497.

My boat has the same problem of a wet dripping coming from the bottom
forefoot area of the keel. I first noticed a crack had developed in the
fibreglass last year. This April I ground out a groove 2-3" deep by 18"
long in the forefoot. That's when I noticed the grey sand like material.
What I didn't like is that it smelled of diesel fuel - my boat has a Bukh 10
diesel. I let her dry out for 4 weeks - and tried to find the source of the
dampness. No luck however. I then filled the groove with 2 part epoxy and
overcoated it with anti-fouling paint.

A fellow at the yacht club, who used to build boats professionally, told me
this spring that the grey powder that looks like cement is called
"vermiculite".

Vermiculite is any of a group of micaceous minerals consisting mainly of
hydrated silicate of magnesium, aluminum and iron. It was used as a filler
in the 1960s and 1970s.

He said that the ballast in Alberg 30s can be iron slabs, pellets, and even
nails. The vermiculite was used to fill any air spaces - and prevent the
iron from banging around when sailing.

My boat was made in 1977.
