[Alberg30] Bilge Blower

My 1967 Alberg has a noisy bilge exhaust blower.  I would like to keep
it on continuously when the engine is running.  Does anyone know if a
variable speed switch in the blower circuit will work so it can be
slowed down and therefore quieted down.  I have been told the this will
ruin the blower motor.  Alternately, are there newer quieter or variable
speed fans available?  Any information will be appreciated.
