[Alberg30] Alberg 30 Rudder post

I had a similar experience with my boat (#505) several years ago. Water was
coming in somewhere around the rudder post, especially when motoring, but it
was difficult to from where due to the tight space. From the lazarette, I
re-packed the rudder stuffing box and tightened it down tight, but still had
water coming in. Further investigation proved that the water was entering
between the hull and the rudder tube itself. To repair it (with the boat on
land), I removed the rudder; removed the engine (to allow access to that
area); fortunately years earlier I had are re-located the fuel tank; then I
ground away all of the fiberglass around the rudder tube (with a Dremel
tool) and removed the rudder tube completely. Once everything was out I
discovered that there was a large void in the area where the rudder tube
passed through the boat. I cleaned everything up thoroughly and started the
re-assembly process. I bedded the rudder tube in 3M 5200 (it took 2 entire
tubes of 5200) and re-installed the rudder to hold everything in alignment.
After the 5200 dried (it took almost two weeks) I re-glassed the tube and
surrounding area inside the boat. Then I used to opportunity to paint the
entire area. Once complete, I had the scare of my life, because the rudder
would not turn. It seems some of the 5200 found its way between the tube and
the rudder stock and she was glued in the straight ahead position. It took a
little persuasion by I managed to free the rudder by working it back and
forth. I am happy to report that..."it don't leak no more" and that repair
was about 15 years ago.

I consider this to be "worst case scenario" and sure hope no one else has to
do this...it was not fun.
