Great thought.And it fits right in with my idea of using semi-cooked potatos: 
they'll mash right into the grooves and seal off any air leakage!
As for a technique for creating lands and grooves, I confess I don't even 
know how it's done in regular gunsmithing, but I guess we'd have to start 
with extra thick walled PVC. Might be simpler to put little angled tailfins 
on the potato. But I'll keep thinking about it.
