[Alberg30] Repowering opinions and Atomic-4 for sale

Harlan, your boat has a liner, unlike the older boats pre-400 that do not.
The engine bed is an integral part of that liner. Therefore a major
consideration is the engine bed. On the older boats it wasn't that difficult
to modify, on boats with liners it becomes more of an issue. That's one of
the main reasons I chose the engine I did about 4 years ago when I chose to
re-power in "Gilleleje" #505 which also has a liner. So, I choose an engine
that matches the mounting locations as close as possible to the A4. Be aware
that Whitby made some extender plates for the A4 for the Alberg. Important
measurements are: centerline of the boat to centerline of the port/starboard
mounting holes; Centerline of the aft mounting hole to the rear of the
engine [back of flange]; Centerline of forward mounting holes to front of
engine and finally distance between the for and aft mounting holes. Engine
height and depth from engine mounts are also important. I wanted to do the
job myself with only minor outside help [such as final alignment]. If I had
chosen an engine with very different mounts, it would have meant contracting
out the installation at a cost of about $2500.

As for power...when running at 1400 RPM in the A4 you are not very far up on
the power curve and are only using about 10HP. Several Albergs have
re-powered with 10.5 HP diesels and are under powered in choppy seas. It's
important to note that the transmission in the diesel uses a 2:1 reduction
vs. direct drive (1:1) with the A4, therefore you will be running the diesel
at 2800 RPM to achieve the 1400 RPM Shaft speed. A 20HP engine at 2800RPM is
more than enough power! Hull speed will probably be reached at 2400-2500
RPMs. Plan to re-prop the boat, the A4 prop won't work.

Hope this has been helpful. I have some tips and tricks that I used to make
the job easier. Let me know when you are ready and I will share them with
you. The attached photo will show my installation and you should be able to
see the forward port mount clearly enough to see the minor modification I
had to make. Best of luck.
