[Alberg30] Autopilots?

I can't recommend any of the current crop--not having used any of them--but
I would recommend that you can probably downsize from whatever is commonly
recommended for your average 30 fter today. Albergs generally track
straight and have a relatively large rudder, meaning that once sail is
properly set for the prevailing conditions, you won't need much to steer the
boat. All other things being equal, buy the one that uses the least juice.
Speed of response won't generally do you much good--the boat is heavy,
relative to recently built boats, and if you are overpowered, the autopilot
is not your most important consideration. I have an old navico that is
usually recommended for boats to 28 feet (if I remember correctly) and have
always found it more than adequate. In the Chesapeake (he said, desirous ot
the truth of full disclosure) it gets used as often as not for motoring in
flat calms. It does reasonably well in any chop to about 3 feet on any
point of sail abeam or forward of it. It will sail the boat downwind well,
but requires increased vigilance as the wind increases if the main is used;
it is much happier with only the big Genoa.
