[Alberg30] Notes on installing A-30 mast brace

When I did the installation, I coated the plates with West System epoxy just
prior to clamping them in place for the final time. Prior to that I clamped
first one plate in place dry, then drilled out the exisiting holes for 5/16"
bolts, then using the bolts to hold the "drilled" plate in place, I clamped
on the othe plate in proper position, then drilled from the other side so
all the holes lined up exactly. Finally when I was absolutely sure that
everthing was where I wanted it, I washed the aluminum with west system
aluminum etch and coated each with epoxy. Then clamped both plates in place
and bolted the whole mess together.

Dan and the Alberg Team.

I received the plates yesterday afternoon which will be installed in #114.
Dan, I appreciate the suggestion of spacing which may be effected by heat
and cold. During the installation process did anyone upgrade the bolt size,
the original bolts seem very light for this application?

One important detail about fitting is to make sure that there is about
1/8" clearance between the top of the brace and the roof, so thatthe
deck will not get cracks in it when the beam is under maximum
compression. I have heard of people who put the braces too close to the
"ceiling" and ended up with small cracks inthe deck over time. We
installed ours with the mast off (no load), so the gap is allthe more
important under that condition.

Also, if you are jacking up the support, be sure to open up the cabin
sole floor hatches and use a 4 x4 or other wood so you jack against the
structual top of the keel. Do -not- jack against the floor, you risk
damaging it.
