Mike,
Thank you for the information concerning the bolt size and plate
installation. I installed the plates this afternoon in Carina Vela, the
majority of time was spent sanding and fitting the plates to the beam.
Followed your recommendations to the letter, the installation looks quite
nice. I hated to give up the look of a wooden beam but didn't have any
choice. Total installation time was approximately 6 hours (not bad for the
first (hopefully last plate install)
Regards,
Stephen Sousa

George is absolutely right. There have been over 100 A30's with this repair
and it time-tested over 20 years proven to be the correct fix. Find another
yard!

Tom,
How many Alberg 30 deck beams has the yard boss repaired? I would
bet that there are over a hundred that have been successfully repaired
with the sistering plates. The point is not to hold the laminations
together, but to provide the strength that the laminations don't
have.
You could squirt some epoxy between the delaminated pieces before
jacking up the beam, if you want. I can't see how it would hurt.
I'm not a structural engineer, but I'd bet that a combination of
the two plates epoxied to the beam and through-bolted to each other
will provide plenty of strength. Bruce Rankin developed this fix
and I have great faith in his engineering abilities.
