Chris, the original may well have been iron, but that's not the point.
Whenever you buy a compass, you nearly always have to have it adjusted to
compensate for ambient magnetic variations at the mounting point. As but one
obvious example, think of the original mounting place for the A30's compass
-- the bridgedeck compass well. It's a fine place to put a compass, except
that it's right on top of the engine. No way you can take a compass out of
the box, mount it in that location and expect it to give you a reliable
bearing.
So, before you go ripping out your exhaust, ask your yard guy to refer you to
a compass guy.
