[Alberg30] Old Cooling System

My 1967 Alberg, #233 with an Atomic 4 seems to have a different engine
cooling system than most. The hose that goes from the thru hull to the
water pump is T 'd just after the thru hull and another hose comes from
the top of the engine to the intake hose. This hose returns heated
water to the intake hose. Where this hose comes off the engine, there
is supposed to be, according to the manual, a temperature control
valve. It is not there. Instead there was a wooden plug in this hose
preventing all or most of the hot water returning to the cooling water.

All of this came to light a couple of weeks ago when the engine started
to pump overly hot water causing some noticeable steam at the exhaust.
The wooden plug had started to deteriorate, allowing too much hot water
to return to the cooling system.

Is anyone familiar with this system? Does anyone know where the
temperature control valve may be available or have any other ideas of
how to handle this situation?

Any information will be appreciated.
