Bill,
That sounds like the standard setup on the older engines. I think
you can get a new thermostat at www.moyermarine.com. I've currently
got mine set to run all the water through the engine all the time,
as it appears yours was. (But I don't have the recycle hose at all.)
It runs a bit cold in the spring, but it works. When I rebuild the
engine in my basement, I plan to add freshwater cooling.
