Greg,
Check the condition of your thermostat housing. The housing has a sort of
pipe nipple that comes down from the top that feeds the bypass water from
the T fitting on the side plate of the motor. When the thermostat opens, the
top plate of the thermostat must close off the pipe nipple to force the
water to go through the motor. If all of this is in good repair and working
properly, the temperature should regulate to about 160`. Have you checked
your guage and sending unit and wire / connections? The more common problem
is overheating.
