Thanks George- I can't find my manual- but what you are saying is what I was
remembering. In this case, the rubber hose  is embedded in the caulk..but it
looks like there is enough goop to cover two clamps.

Tom,

The hose should be attached with *two* hose clamps at *each* end, for
a total of four.  This should be the case for all bits of rubber hose
below the waterline.

It's normal that the shaft log be embedded in gobs of caulk, but the
rubber hose should not be.  Do you have a copy of the Maintenance 
Manual?  In the "prop" chapter there's a pretty good cutaway drawing
of the shaft log and stuffing box (though it only shows one hose
clamp at each end of the hose).
