[Alberg30] When to replace spreaders?

I have wooden spreaders on my boat which was made in 1970.When I asked the surveyor this question, he thought that if the wood was sound there was no reason to change them. If they are sound and you want to change them, fall is a good time. I have not had this happen but I think waiting for a failure would not be a good idea because of the role they play in keeping the mast doing its job.

Sunspur, #235, still has the wooden spreaders, so the recent thread begs my
question, "Any thoughts on when one should change from original wooded to
aluminum:
1. Soon as one can?  OR
2. If you have the mast down for some reason, change out then? OR
3. Wait until one or both spreaders fail?

Sail Net in Florida can make you an aluminium duplicate of your wooden ones.
They did it for me on a previous boat. I sent them the old ones.
