I have just learned through another list of the passing of Gord
Proctor, known as "Mr Alberg" in Toronto. He attributed a significant
part of his success in racing to usually being the first to reduce sail
in a rising wind.
Gord was well into his 80s--he cut a dashing figure with his plaid hat
and white hair and beard.
He died at a Shellbacks luncheon, a meeting of enthusiastic sailors held
every week through the winter aboard a ship moored in Toronto Harbour.
I was privileged to meet him a few years ago at Shellbacks, and we
enjoyed several lunch-time conversations together. He was loved and
respected in that company.
Despite the attendance of 9 emergency personnel in response to the 911
call, he could not be saved. I am told he died 'without pain among
friends'.
