Over the past summer I examined the shaft in the water while sailing, saw 
some drips, did some slight tightening of the stuffing box, noticed that 
the vibration was more when idling--1,000 rpm than when running at 2400. 
 Felt the box, somewhat warm, & took the advice to have more water in the 
bilge than a hot shaft.  Like most shafts it balances out after higher 
rpms.  I'm just a little uneasy loosening the engine bolts without having a 
good plan, such as a nice set of adjustable mounts & the space to put them 
in.  I ordered a flexible stuffing box hose but when I got it, it was very 
lightweight and really thin, so I went with some exhaust hose, much 
thicker. I suppose I should pull the shaft & see if there is any wear--it 
was new two years ago and is stainless.  The old bronze shaft was quite 
grooved in several places.  Besides, how often do you have to rush back to 
harbour?  Sort of like with cars, they say the more horsepower you have the 
faster you can run away from danger...
