[Alberg30] A30 / Prop

John,
Are you talking about the CDI Atomic 4 plastic prop? If so, I have one
installed on my A30. I originally got it for two reasons (which are the two
reasons CDI pushes).
Firstly, it's supposed to improve reverse. It does but it certainly isn't
a VAST improvement. It is still a two bladed prop in an aperture and suffers
from prop walk like all the other two bladed props. Being in the aperture,
it causes as much sideways movement as aft movement and with the slightly
cut away forefoot, a side wind drives the bow downwind. This causes the old
saying, "she backs to port" to be more dependant on wind direction than prop
rotation. It does back down slightly better than the original prop but the
key word is "slightly".
The second reason to buy the prop is the best. It's diameter / pitch
combination allows the A4 to max out at a higher RPM than the original prop.
This gives you more horsepower available to put in the water and allows your
A4 to run at better RPM's for the same boat speed. Of course, this can also
be accomplished much cheaper by having your bronze prop repitched.
I'm OK with my purchase of this prop because I was after the RPM
improvement as much as the reverse improvement. The three blade prop that
Indigo sells may be a better reverse improver but remember, it is still in
the aperture. Both the CDI and the Indigo props were designed and tested on
fin keel boats like the Tartan 34 (Indigo) and the Catalina 30 (CDI). On
these boats the prop is in open water and reverse thrust does not
immediately run into a wide flat plate for about half of it's area. Full
keel boats don't back down well, but then again, their designed to go
forwards.
Regards,
