For a real good explanation of how various self steering set ups work, try
to find a copy of
"Self-Steering for Sailing Craft" by John S. Letcher Jr.
It may be out of print now. My copy was published by International Marine
Publishing Co., Camden, Maine, copyright 1974. The catalog card # 74-81711.
This book goes into a full explanation of sheet to tiller set ups as well as
different vane types and touches on electronic autopilots.
Regards,
