I'm pretty sure that I did report the first spam to abuse at bellsouth.net,
but they're not terribly concerned about holding people to their
acceptable use policy. I have reported hundreds of spammers over
the past few years and have, on a couple of occasions, received a
reply that the spamming account has been terminated. While this is
gratifying, it really makes little difference to the problem as it's
easy to open a new account. Still, I feel a responsibility to do
what I can to combat the problem and I still often report spammers
or open relay machines.
