Mike, first I would NOT ""T the return into the supply line.  This could cause problems.  

Somewhere between the tank and pump you must have a pinhole air leak, there is no other way air could get into the line.  Check carefully (pressure test if you can) the dip tube, perhaps there is a pin hole there.  You may be able to take out the dip tube, cap off the line at the pump (output side) and pressureize the dip tube.  Then look for any bubbles.  Someone else in Bahamas last year had the exact same problem and it turned out to be a pin hole in the top of his filter.  He found it by the pressure test method.  Replaced with my spare RACOR and his problem disappeared.
