My lifelines were secured to the shrouds by that fancy kind of whipping
whose name I don't remember, but is the kind usually seen wrapped around
steering wheels. It's simple and strong, though I'm not sure how necessary.
The only problem is that you have to cut it away each time you unstep the
mast. It does take some sag out of the lifelines, but remember George
Dinwiddie's advice and not to rely on the lifelines for real security.

Cruising the Chesapeake: A Gunkholer's Guide

My favorite Chesapeake Bay guidebook. While it mentions marinas,
it concentrates on anchorages--the kind of places I prefer to spend
my time. And in addition to listing shore facilities, it rates each
location for Beauty/Interest and Protection. This is the guide you
need to really cruise the Chesapeake Bay--a smorgasbord of small
  creeks and coves.
