Raritan really advises a 3/4 inch vent hose with as straight a run as possible. In addition, they think that the best way to deal with odor is to introduce areobic  bacteria that will neutralize the anareobic bacteria that live in the waste. They sell a product called KO which performs this function. It is avaliable at West Marine. they also make a head cleaner that is compatible with KO - also carried by west marine.

George; in the added paragraph #4 wherein you mention the problem with the 
air vents and hoses on the top of the tank, what was the problem? On #303, 
Emotional Rescue, we have a slight odor but nothing else. The idea of adding 
a port and starboard vent hose is interesting. But it would seem better to 
get the vents up higher in the tank rather than on the forward "side". Ed.
