If I understand your message, you are proposing to 'spot repair' 30 year old
gelcoat. Tone of the original color won't matter much, as you'll have to
custom blend to match-fade happens.

There are a lot of manufacturers who no longer use gel coat-linear urethane
(i.e. imron, interthane,awlgrip,sterling, etc.) has proven more resilient
and gives better service. I've used interthane (gloss black applied with
roller/brush) twice now. First application lasted (I am talking just
cosmetic gloss) over 12 years. I don't wax.

If you are contemplating doing gel coat yourself, consider doing the whole
nut with linear urethane. I figure I spend about $300.00 in parts (+labor; a
whole lot of labor). I achieve what I call a 15' finish-looks perfect from
that distance. Black is the most difficult color to do, they say.
