[Alberg30] barrier bottom protection

I think you are getting a variety of good advice here, and I just want to
point out that Calliope was "barrier coated" ten years ago or so with some
sort of coal-tar expoxy that was the standard preventive measure at the
time.  You might want to experiment a bit with removing all the bottom paint
down to the old barrier coat over a square foot or so and examine the
condition of that layer. Its pretty obbvious once you start looking for it.
>From that, maybe you could see how that old barrier coat is holding up and
decide to keep it or strip it. 

Why was the old barrier coat put on? I have no idea. The owner at that time
had all his work done by a yard, and it may have been needed or he may have
thought it was a good preventative measure. Unlike "modern" barrier coats,
you'll find the coal tar is relatively soft, and so might not breed its own
blisters that a few folks have experienced with the newer coats.

If you went to the work of completely stripping the current coatings now,
then just putting on your bottom paint, when you haul in 9 mos you'll be
able to get a good indication of any future need for more protection.

I am in the process of preparing my bottom for going into the water, and I
am wondering if it is worth my time and money to sand all the way down to
original gelcoat and do a barrier coat of some epoxy-based paint in order to
ensure that the bottom will be well protected. The boat has been out of the
water for 2 years, so I know that the whole hull is totally dry. There is a
part of me that says this is a great opportunity which I won't have again in
the near future (since I plan to keep the boat in the water at least 9
months per year), and that I should take advantage of it. However, there is
another part of me that says 'if she doesn't have blisters after 36 years,
she's probably not going to get them in another 20 years'. Does anybody have
any advice, experience, or opinions on this subject?
