[Alberg30] Stern Tube Goop

I have been waiting with baited breath for a good answer to a sailors
earlier question regarding the reason
the stern tube is bedded in several tubes of caulking. I have  a vessel
that has this bedding removed and am
thinking it needs to be replaced... or not. Any good answers.
