[Alberg30] Stern Tube Bonding

I removed the "hard crap", the polyester around the stern tube, leaving only
the cleaned up hole and surrounding hull. The Cutalss bearing casing is
bolted to the outside of the keel and the stern tube isscrewed into it. The
hull is several inches thick and with a liberal amount of 5200 built up
around the tube and filling all of the voids, there is plenty of strength.

The shaft should exit through the stern tube "dead center". If you believe
that the engine was properly aligned and you haven't made any adjustments to
the engine, then you can use the engine flange to align the stern tube. What
I did was to wrap tape around the shaft to take up the difference between
the inside tube diameter and outside shaft diameter. This tape acted as a
spacer that I removed after the 5200 had cured completely (about 2 weeks).
This *tape* spacer was placed at a critical place on the shaft; where the
shaft exited the tube on the forward end of the tube. The idea is 1. the
shaft is held in proper position aft by the cutlass bearing (a new one) 2.
forward by the engine flange. The tube is supported aft by the cutlass
bearing housing and forward by the tape spacer around the shaft. Once dry,
pull the shaft out, take off the tape, reinstall the shaft. This process
does not work and should not be follwed if you have an mis-aligned engine.
Hope this helps. Easy to do...hard to explain.

Alfredo, pictures would be great when you have them. To avoid hitting
everyone with bitmaps, perhaps you could you send them to
voyagertoronto at hotmail.com.

Question for Mike: so is all the "hard crap that Whitby used" all gone from
yours, then, and is 5200 the only thing holding your tube in, other than the
threading into the casing?

BTW, before coupling the shaft to the engine, is it necessary that the shaft
be sitting dead centre of the stern tube? Although I haven't bonded in the
tube yet (which might make a difference), I've mocked up the whole
arrangement by bolting in the stern casing/stern tube and putting in the
shaft just to see how it might look, and the forward end of the shaft
emerges off-centre from the tube, though it doesn't touch. Is it legit to
rely on the coupling eventually pulling it dead centre?

Regards & thanks. Calvin Voyager#30
