I think if you can afford it, a rigid vang is really cool because it 
supports the boom without using a topping lift. I think a topping lift 
is a total pain in the butt, because I always remove it when I am 
sailing (because if I don't, it catches my top batten and flings it out 
of the sail - I learned this lesson the hard way), which means that I 
have to unhook it from the end of the boom and take it forward to the 
gooseneck, while somebody else drives the boat...very bad for 
singlehanding...
A rigid vang is expensive, but I think it must be worth the extra cost 
just in hassle reduction. I don't have one because it doesn't fit my 
budget right now, but if you want to get one, I have heard many good 
things about the rigid vangs sold by Garhauer:

If you call them, they will custom build the mast and boom fittings for 
you so that it will be maximally easy to install, so I am told.
