hey guys
seems to be a lot of attention lately on this goop on the shaft log.
i did a big refit this summer on #334 and one of the things getting treatment was the cutlass bearing so i removed the bearing housing the log and the shaft. since the boat was new to me i also removed all the goop because it was fairly wet and i wanted to know if it was covering up a problem. like a crack[it wasn't].but i did have to fix the bolt holes for the bearing housing as they were stripped . there used to be a couple of threaded stainless bolts mearly turned into the fiberglass. so my modification was to through bolt the top one with a nut on the inside and for the bottom one i filled the small part of the cavity with an epoxed+glass mixture and the used a 2 1/2 in lag bolt/ with sikaflex on and around all the holes incl.the shaft log at the opening of the hole. but thats it.
however i did't see any need to fill the inside of the cavity and around the shaft log the way it was originally.
can anyone tell me why you would want all that goop in there in the first place?
LAZ #334
