If a boat was built in Canada and originally taken delivery in Canada and
the old FST was paid at the time and you can provide the supporting
documentation, then there will be no GST. PST you pay for at the port you
are registering it in at the Provincial Tax Office. The price is determined
by the bill of sale and is adjusted into Canadian Dollars on the date of
import for GST. The PST is based on the date of payment to the Province for
exchange purposes.
You are responsible for ensuring that the boat is delisted by the USGC as a
boat cannot have registry in two countries simultainiously - check with the
local USCG office - this process may take a while. Additionally, you must be
careful to get the boat out of the State it is in within their time
parameters - the USCG will tell you.
They may have changed the rules and collect at the Canadian Border - if you
are sailing in you will be directed to the Port Customs wishes you to attend
and you must wait on board until Customs comes - they are pretty good about
promptness - but arrange ahead and update via VHF your arrival time.
