Stephen (et al),
When you do this job find, borrow, or buy a heat gun to heat the hose
with. I mean the type generally sold for paint removal, that sort of
resembles a hair dryer. It works all the time with no nasty smells and none
of those special words / phrases either. I routinely use it on all of my
tight hose connections or when I need a hose to take a particularly tight
bend. I used it today on black 3/4" heater hose with fiber cord in it while
reattaching new hoses to my hot water heat exchanger. It was a snug fit
immediately followed by a tight radius turn. No Problem.
On my last boat (#497), I used this heat gun on every one of the hose
connections in the head system (white vinyl hose 1 1/2" & 3/4"). The real
nice part of this is that the heat expands the hose to make fitting easy,
but then when it cools, it really tightens up on the hose barb.
