I cut a large access in the starboard locker that lets me get my head and usually one sholder in behind the engine.  I'm 5'8" and 155 pounds so make your own guess.  I used a saber saw and cut it as large as possible.  When it isn't in use, I put the piece back in and hold it with a couple 1x3 pine battens.  These are screwed to the access plate and the lip.  Haven't noticed any weakning.
