[Alberg30] Atlas' lever, and moving a diesel

Two things...

1. You should not have to remove the rudder to remove the shaft. Take the 
prop off and upcouple the shaft coupling at the engine. The shaft can be 
forced out of the coupling flange by using longer bolts when you separate 
the two halves to screw the two flanges back together. When you screw them 
back together, put a 9/16 socket between the two flanges in the center to 
push the shaft out. Tighten each flange bolt slowly and keep moving from one 
to the next until the shaft is free. The shaft will easily slide out by the 
rudder.

2. You don't need to take the shaft out to change the cutlass bearing. There 
are two bolts on the bearing housing. Remove them. Then unscrew the housing 
from the stern tube and take it a workshop to replace the cutlass bearing. 
Make sure when you replace the bearing that you make some holes in it where 
the water vents are in the housing. This can be done after the new bearing 
is install in the housing by drilling holes from the vents.

This is not a difficult proceedurer

My Alberg 30 Friends,

Stargazer arrived in Fairhaven, Mass in one piece yesterday. If anyone needs
a boat moved, I highly recommend Bayline Marine in New Bedford.  $980 from

Stargazer needs a new cutlass bearing, and with the big three blade prop she
came with, the rudder is going to have to come off to get the shaft out.

But, the engine needs a new motor mount, and new fuel lines hooked up, so I
am considering moving the engine to get the shaft out instead.

Has anyone moved their engine by themselves? Is the cabin top strong enough
to hold the weight of the engine, if a beam is put across the companionway,
and a block and tackle rigged from it to lift the engine?

Has anyone recently changed the cutlass bearing, and found any techniques
that are an improvement over what is in the A30 maintainance manual?

Stargazer's volvo MD11 has sat for 4.5 years now, not having been run. It 
has
never been subjected to rain water all this time, fortunately, and the cabin
has been kept dry as my good friend Gary Schmitt has kept the cover on, and
siphoned out any water that found its way to the bilge.  It turns over 
easily
by hand.  Any tips on things to particularly check or watch out for when I
try to revive it?  The raccoon family that moved in two years ago only 
chewed
the sound proofing insulation inside the engine box, not any wires. They 
were
thoughtful raccoons!!  :)

I will be mounting one of the Tempo vertical fuel tanks in the stbd cockpit
locker. Anyone done this; any specific tips there?

It's going to be a busy April, but man, is it great to be able to be getting
back to all this!!!!!!!!!
