Mike,
There was a thread on this previously. Someone mentioned that the originals
with fir. I made a set from white oak with an epoxy coating. These were
painted white and have been in service for four years.

But what do you use to protect the paint? Sheesh ;-)
How about just using spar varnish (the name should be a clue)? Then you get
to check the grain of the wood for cracks and water intrusion.
BTW I'm betting the original spreaders were spruce as the original poster
intended to use.
