Tom,
I was in your shoes a little over a year ago. I had a Lightning and did not
feel it was appropriate for an expanding family (now..2 1/2 years and 3 1/2
weeks!) I looked at Tritons and Alberg 30's and ended up with in a
partnership in an Alberg. The advice you've been receiving here is
good...The Alberg is a beautiful boat, with a great owners group. (the
Triton has a very good owners group as well)
My two biggest concerns were the condition of the engine and potential
delamination of the deck core. I saw many boats with balsa cores (Tritons
mostly) that had significant delamination.
If the opportunity presents itself do not rule out a partnership. The
financial outlay and the investment of blood, and sweat that accompany the
purchase/ownership of a larger boat are considerable. I partnered in solid
boat w/ a masonite core (#254) which had all the major fixes already done
and had been well maintained. Together we accomplished many systems
upgrades (new MSD, main sail, compass, running rigging, new traveler and
autopilot, wiring, etc). The financial impact of these upgrades is lessened
when split between partners. Having a partner also significantly reduces
the time it takes to commission and decommission every year.
A LIKE MINDED PARTNER is critical for this to work! I won't speak for my
partner, but I feel like it has worked out very well.
Terrapin is moored in Spa Creek - Annapolis. Feel free to drop me a note if
you would like to take a look!
Best Regards,
Mike Hiesener
Terrapin #254
