[Alberg30] Zinc Anode location

For a zinc anode protecting a prop/shaft to be effective, must it be in the
water? I have no space on the shaft outside the hull, but a good 2 fingers
width inside the hull forward of the stuffing box. The archives refer to a
zinc one can fit over the prop-retaining nut, but this is less readily
obtained. Inside the hull would also facilitate installation, inspection and
replacement--no haulout required. Thanks for the replies on the prop
aperture.
