[Alberg30] Thru-hulls

If you do not plan to re-use the thru hull fittings - use a reciprocating saw like a Milwaukee Sawzall and cut them off. It makes short work of a difficult task. If you don't have one, lots of places rent them. Be careful not to harm the boat.

  Alan,

A few thoughts that may help when deinstalling of the thru hulls. Those
located behind the motor are the most difficult to reach, I purchased a
socket that fits the nuts and remove the units in that manner. A pipe wench
works well but the fiber glass can do a number on your fingers when it
slips. I also applied a "little" heat and the thru hulls literally fall out
the boat, no hammering required. Personally, I like Buck Algonquin ball
valves over Apollo or purchase a true sea cock (base and screw into the
hull) either from a Buck distributor or Spartan Marine in Maine (they carry
spare parts for Cape Dory). The other source is Jamestown Distributors in
Bristol, RI they will send you a catalog and ship mail order.

  Regards,
  Stephen

  Mark, Larry, and Stephen,
Thanks for your comments. Before I read your e-mails I broused the public
list archives and read about the two piece "home made" through hulls that
Whitby installed. I quickly ran out back to check what we had, and there
they were, just like they were described. It was a bit eerie.
So, after reading your responses, it was easy to come to the conclusion that
I am going all the way - new thru-hulls, new seacocks, even new hoses.

I feel a whole lot better now.
  Thanks again,

  Alan +---------------------------------------------------------------+
