James,
If you look, you will come across several A30's that will fit your budget
and meet your needs. Try:
http://www.alberg30.org/collaborate/moin.cgi/AlbergBoatsForSale
which is just the listing within the A30 web site. Of course there are
advantages to buying one that has already been completely redone including
the cosmetics. There's nothing to do but enjoy. If you buy one in the price
range you want, there will probably still be some redoing that will be
required in the long run. This of course means that you will be spending more
than just the purchase price, but you should be able to find one that you
can sail and cruise quite comfortably immediately. The biggest advantage I
see in doing your own restoration / upgrade work is that you will know all
there is to know about what you work on. This leads to pride in ownership
and self reliance which are both good things when your cruising. Most of the
tasks that will be required to do are fairly easy (especially with the help
of this wonderful group) and not really expensive. The A30 is a very sea
worthy design and gives a very comfortable ride. You would be hard pressed
to find a more "modern" design in the same price range that will feel as
good under foot.
Good luck on your search,
Happy New Year,
Brian ex#497
