[Alberg30] Hinged Mast Base

I have a rare piece that I bought from Coast Navigation during their "going out of business sale". It is made by an Italian company named NEMO and I paid $75 for it. Normally they run $200-$300. The features that I looked for were good bearings, making it easy to adjust under load and folding handles so I could open the lazarette hatch, which is the drawback, in my opinion, to the ones that have wheels for making the adjustments.

  tuned rig and a backstay adjuster to tighten the backstay when the wind

  increases. I use a backstay adjuster primarly to take tension off when

  Thanks Mike; makes sense; plus, since the main stays are on the
  centerline
  of the beam,  best opportunity to keep mast in column.   Are you aware
  of
  any reason to have the base adjustable?  Seems to me, if one wants to
  adjust
  mast rake (I used to increase mast rake on my Hobie 16 for better
  upwind
  performance but don't know if it is a factor with a low aspect main),
  it
  could be done with the stays.
