Greg,
  I'm sick with the Flu (real bad since Monday night) so I'm not sure I can
explain my own logic.
  In wet cell, lead acid, old style, batteries you would get more Ah, longer
life, and generally better performance from 2 6V in series than from 2 12V
in parallel. That is the reasoning behind my decision to add 2 6V.  The 2
12V I already own. They have lived together with equal usage all of their
lives and are still in good shape. They are certainly not new anymore, so I
don't want to bank them up with new batteries.
  I have done a reasonable amount of research into the differences between
wet cell and AGM. I'm not sure if there is, and have been advised that there
isn't much of a difference between using 2 12s or 2 6s hooked up to give
similar voltage and AH output with AGM. On the wet cells, the plates were
stronger, thicker, and lasted better in the 6V batteries.   I tend to be
very traditionalist so that is why my new bank will be 2 6V AGMs in series.
I'll still keep the older 2 12V in parallel in a seperate bank.
  By the way, I also carry a jump box that should be good to start my diesel
in warm weather in an emergency.
