[Alberg30] engines.. and a critical question

Gord,
I agree with your assessment of the merits of the Atomic 4. Mine has been very reliable, maintenance free, and quiet. Although it worked fine, this past year I took it out and sent it to Don Moyer in Harrisburg. I asked him to go over it and do whatever was necessary to help it run well for another 20 years. Two of the enhancements which I particularly appreciated were an easy oil removal system and a new type water pump which doubles the volume of raw water moved through the engine.
I also replaced my fuel tank. I never liked the under-the-cockpit location. I had RDS in Florida (ordered through Boat/US) build a custom aluminum tank for my starboard cockpit locker. They did a beautiful job. It holds 17 gallons. I will be ordering another tank for the port locker, and then only using it when on long cruises.
As to sleeping direction, I rarely sleep in the main cabin, but when I do it is head forward.

We too have agonized over the diesel/gasoline question. Caroline and I
laughed when our "analysis" revealed that it was more economical to buy a
used diesel with a boat around it than a new one and install it in our
Alberg! My feeling is that the A4 is a fine engine and with reasonable
safety precautions is something that I don't mind sharing the boat with.
there is a diesel Alberg in our club - we have more power and the A4 is
certainly smoother and quieter. My only complaint is lack of range with the
standard tank - I am working up to put a second tank in a cockpit locker.

Here is a question I would like to hear people's feelings on; my wife and I
are debating this and I would like to win with your help.

When sleeping in the main cabin bunks - do you lie down with your head
forward or aft? She says I do it backwards. I won't say which I say is
most comfortable so that I can't be accused of poisoning the study.
