I did the same thing on my Cal before I got the solid vang. it worked
fine, but i wanted to get rid of the topping lift.

George and "others" in group. I would not want to depend on the block
and
tackle boom vang to be a "preventer". A nylon "stretchy" line would be
better
lead from the end of the boom forward.

On Emotional Rescue, #303, we received a boom vang arrangement when we
bought
the boat for the sailing club. Unfortunately, the part that fit to the
boom
was a 2-piece stainless steel member that one places in the boom slot
on each
side of the sail foot rope. It had a tendency to slip forward, toward
the
gooseneck. It was almost valueless that way. I attached a bail to the
boom
with a machine bolt thru the boom. I attached another bail to the
bottom of
the mast. The angle is approximately 45 degrees. If one uses a long
enough
line in the block and tackle, and leave the excess hang into the cabin,
it is
an excellent emergency block and tackle to hoist a MOB back into the
boat.
Disconnect it from the mast and boom and attach it to the end of the
boom. We
have tried it when we practice MOB drills. Ed. Schroeder
