I couldn't let this one go by as my wife recently left a position with 
the Newpaper Association of America.  Since she worked in government 
affairs and was heavily involved in the recycling legislation I can 
assure you these figures are the most recent and accurate.

First of all, trees are not cut down to make newsprint.  Newsprint is 
made from wood by-products (sawdust and chips) and recycled paper fiber. 
 Newsprint recently passed corrugated boxes as the most recycled product 
in north america at 78%.

Save your eyes.  Read the paper.  And then reuse and recylce.
