[Alberg30] Roller Furling on head sail

I found that most people in the group make it work by shortening the
length of the extrusion column so that the wrap stop is placed below the
block on the front the mast.  That allows the tang to engage the wrap
stop as it should. 

If you are too literal about the directions ( as I was last year) and
run the extrusion column up to the very top of the head stay and then
put the wrap stop on top of the column, the tang will not be able to
engage. There is a fall postion for this and some people start out with
that intention. 

Here was my fall back position and some people's first intention (Tom
at Rigging Only advises this solution as a first intention). Run the
extrusion column  up to the top of the head stay as the intructions
indicate. Do not put the wrap stop on at all. Attach the hallyard  to
the the ring at the top of the tang making sure that the knot comes very
very close to the block. If it directly abuts the block, the line will
chafe. From what Tom told me, there should be an inch or so separating
the block and the knot that is tied to the tang.

Jim Davis provided an excellent description of what I call the "shared
wisdom" approach to solving the problem. He also provided pictures that
are on the website. 

Stephen Sousa's solution is to build a purpose built masthead for the
profurl unit which ensures that the profurl will work exactly as
designed. He also provided pictures. The price is right - $260.00 in the
group purchace. I discovered today that it is not hard to remove the
mast head. 

It is my impression that all three solutions work well if one follows
directions. It is a matter of deciding which works best for you.

If you have not purchased the profurl, I recommend calling Tom at
Rigging Only ( 508) - 992-0434. They have very good prices and he will
help you with the installation.

I have been thinking about a Profurl system and was wondering  just
what the problem with the mast head is.  I take it that the issue is
halyard wrap.  Is it a function of the angle of the halyard as it enters
the sheave?

I did not step the mast this year when I pulled the boat out of the
water.  
Do I have to unattached the for-stay in order to install a roller
furling?  
What roller furling manufacturer do you recommend?
