Kathy,
I agree with your approach; don't beat on anything or push too hard, until you know for sure! Your winches sound like they have character and I wouldn't want to see them damaged, either! I will email some of my sailing mentors for you today to see if they have any experience with Merriman winches; please excuse any mispellings, I don't have my glasses onn
