[Alberg30] Toe Rail/Hull/Deck Joint Bolts

The deck/hull seam on your vintage Alberg is superior to almost every boat
built. The thru bolts hold the rail in place and add to the strength of the
joint, but if you inspect closely, you will see that the deck/hull joint is
glassed together 3-4" wide for the length of the boat. Before removing the
scarfed piece, I would do my best to drill through to the bolt. If you're
real lucky and careful, you could remove the offending bolt thru the newly
scarfed piece and re-install it with new caulking, then use a teak "bung" to
plug the hole. Good luck, take your time, measure carefully. If it doesn't
work, then remove the scarfed piece and you are no worse than before you
started!

Subject: [Alberg30] Toe Rail/Hull/Deck Joint Bolts
My Alberg is of 1967 vintage, #233 with a teak toe rail sitting on edge with
plugged bolt holes every 15 inches or so. During a long period of rain one
of the bolts develops a drip. At this particular bolt position a new piece
of teak has been scarfed in by the previous owner to repair a damaged top
section of this area of the toe rail. The piece is only about 1 1/4 inches
deep into the old rail and about 12 inches long. Unfortunately, it happens
to cover the offending leaking bolt hole.
Does anyone have any creative ideas of how to fix this short of removing the
scarfed piece, which by the way, is superbly fitted? Also in this vintage,
are the bolts that hold the toe rail, the only mechanical bond binding the
hull and deck together?
Any information or suggestions will be appreciated.
