[Alberg30] Request for Purchasing Advice

Jim;
Interesting that you mention the soft deck condition. I was snooping about
an A30 last year and felt a very squishy deck. It felt as though it would be
an expensive fix.

Dave.

Some of the Albergs manufactured in the early 70's, Hull numbers between
around 400 to 500 developed soft decks. My impression was that the boat
builder, Whitby Boat Works, was learning to use a chopper gun, in the
repairs I've seen it was obvious that the composite was "resin starved" or
too dry--this allowed water to wick in and rot the core. I tried to explain
this to Kurt Hansen all to no avail. Use a hammer on the deck. If you get
any dull thuds in stead of a nice sharp crack you probably got some water &
rot in process. If you can feel the softness when you walk on it I'd say the
deck was in an advanced phase of degradation. I wouldn't buy one with soft
decks.

Mike Lehman has a procedure for installing a holding tank.

Hey Ibby -

There are many hundreds of Alberg 30's here in Canada.... our colleagues in
the the Eastern US are more organized but the boats are still here. Check
out Canadian Yachting's on line review of the class.

There is a broker near me here that does a fair bit of trade in Albergs -
I'll give you his name etc if you write.

On another topic - I got furious at the TV last night watching NZ wander
around tamely following Alinghi. The number one rule anyone learns when
yacht racing is "if you do not have commanding speed over a rival - don't
follow him when you are behind." The one time NZ did start a tacking duel
they made up a lot of ground... but they gave up! I suppose there is some
reason but from my living room couch it looked to me that driving the hell
out of the boat and crew would have been the right thing to do when the
chips are down and the last race is being lost. Oh well - I did enjoy the
coverage.
