[Alberg30] cockpit coamings

Jay and Peter,

The rubber stuff was on all the boats. Whitby used itto seal the backs of
the coamings. Jay, it is important to seal deck water from penetrating
behind the coaming beacause the coaming [although teak] will rot away from
the inside. I used a caulking when I reinstalled mine, I think I used 4200
so I ould take the off again in the future.

Jay
I removed my coaming last year to repaint my deck. They had the same two
sided material which was to prevent water from coming between the coaming
and fiberglass. I replaced it with a GAF roofing material known as 'ice and
water' cover which goes under shingles around the edge of a roof. It is
extremely sticky on one side which is laid down on the roof. I stuck that
side to the wooden coaming and then reattached the coaming. You could put
something sticky on the other side to face the glass but it might be pretty
messy. So far no problem. I am going to put a narrow bead of 4200 along
the outside against the deck just to be sure.

them
off was very difficult, as the prior owner apparently put a two-sided rubber
tape between the wooden coaming and the fiberglass deck. This acted as a
caulk/adhesive, which bonded the wooden coamings to the fiberglass. I assume
that the reason for putting it there was to avoid having deck water run
under the coaming and into the cockpit. I don't plan on replacing it, as the
problem of deck water seems pretty minimal to me. Does anyone have any other
thoughts on this?
